AIDS Information Switzerland (AIS) is a Switzerland-based international non-gouvernmental organisation founded in 1989 by Swiss physicians. AIS is a democratically structured, independent, non-confessional association; its main goal is the prevention of further spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic by the reduction of HIV transmission. It spreads information about the HIV infection by publications in various languages as well as by conferences and by indivudual counselling. It encourages voluntary HIV testing and scientifically based control of the epidemic. Being concerned about the social implications of HIV/AIDS, AIS contributes to the legal and ethical discussion in this area; as an NGO in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, it promotes the UN's human rights principles and the ratification of UN's convention about illicit drugs, and it cooperates with organisations from developing countries in the area of HIV prevention.
